So we seem to totally embrace the reasons why it’s important to use filtered water for drinking and cooking, but showering? Why would someone need to use a filtered water for bathing? There is one big reason, and it’s called chlorine.
How Chlorine Affects the Body:
Our bodies are exposed to Chlorine in 3 different ways:
- Absorption: Our skin absorbs chlorine from water and airAbsorbing it through our skin from water and air
- Drinking and eating: We ingest it when we drink tap water that is treated with chlorine
- Inhalation: We breathe in chlorine fumes that are released from the water
Chlorine is an effective disinfectant, but it’s not great for our skin, hair, or bodies.
Our skin is porous, like a sponge. What we apply to it gets absorbed into the bloodstream efficiently. Think about how many medicines are prescribed transdermally, via a patch or cream that is applied to the skin. When we shower the warm water opens our pores and allows it to, more easily, absorb chlorine and other chemicals.
Chlorine is not only absorbed through the skin, it is also vaporized into the air and inhaled into our lungs while we shower.
The Link Between Chlorine & Cancer:
For a long time now, chlorine has been a suspected link to bladder cancer and colon cancer. A study mentioned in this article on scientificamerican.com, “found that women with breast cancer have 50-60 percent higher levels of organochlorines (chlorine by-products) in their breast tissue than cancer-free women.”
Shower Filters: Solutions to Remove Chlorine from Water:
The solution is to filter the water we shower with. You could install a whole house filter or a Home Reverse Osmosis Water Filtration System.
Another, more economical solution to remove the chlorine from your water, is to install a filtered shower head. They are a simple DIY project because they install easily into your existing shower plumbing. Perfect for homeowners as well as renters in an apartment, dorm, or home.
